2014: The Year of the Biggest Hacks, Data Breaches & Leaks We’ve Ever Seen!

Will History Repeat Itself or Will Obama’s 30 Day Breach Warning Lessen the Number of Disastrous Data Breaches?

Business Data Protection

In 2014, we saw a lot of advanced new threats coming out and targeting businesses of all types and sizes, such as spear-phishing, which made a multitude of headlines throughout the year. Did you come into 2015 with a nagging sense of worry and vulnerability about cyber security? If so, you’re not alone – understandably, most businesses did.

Think President Obama’s New Laws Will Be Enough to Protect YOUR Confidential Data? Think Again!

As we’ve seen far too many companies experience costly data breaches, the new laws shouldn’t come as a surprise. President Obama has plans for three new laws designed to better protect citizens’ data – but are they enough? The ‘Personal Data Notification & Protection Act’ proposal requires a 30-day notification upon the discovery of a breach.

While it’s a great start – and it’s definitely necessary for consumers to be notified so they can change their passwords and review their bank statements, it’s not going to do anything to prevent breaches. It’s also not making any requirements for companies and law enforcement to work together and determine who the hackers are.

Until we’ve found a way to lessen the amount of disastrous data breaches, it’s up to you to take the right precautions – security MUST be top priority, no matter what. It’s inevitable: eventually, an employee will, at some point, open a malicious attachment or click a dangerous link.

What can you do to make sure you’re prepared for that moment? Here’s a few tips to keep your business safe:

  • Train employees on proper security best practices – and make sure they know how to identify a malicious link or website.
  • Install anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date, then run the software on a regular basis to scan for viruses.
  • Use a firewall that keeps dangerous unauthorized users outside of your network and away from your confidential data.
  • Keep data backed up to ensure you’re able to access data, even if ransomware hits your computer and locks it down.

Above all, don’t let your company become yet another victim of cybercrime – the cost of recovering from a data breach is a lot more expensive than simply preventing one in the first place.

Your Weak Password Is Your Biggest Security Issue

Are You Taking Your Company’s Cyber Security Seriously? Your Password Says Differently.

Every business owner knows that 2014 was an eye-opening year when it comes to security – several large data breaches took place, from J.P. Morgan Chase to Home Depot. Some people are still not learning their lesson and cracking down on cyber security.

password security

Passwords are the gatekeeper to everything from email and banking to total access to our computers and smartphones. A survey conducted by Janrain found that more than 50% of adults use 5 or more passwords – and while it sounds like a good thing, using that many passwords can cause problems. When people are trying to remember that many different codes they tend to go for the easiest possible idea. What’s at the top of this year’s 25 worst used passwords? “123456” and “Password”. Yes, really.

With a basic password as simple as the ones many people are using, it can take hackers less than 2 minutes to break into your system – and they can do a whole lot more than you think in just two minutes. If you’re starting to realize your passwords aren’t adequate, you’re not alone.

What can you do when you need to update your protection but don’t want something you’ll constantly forget and have to reset? Try to follow these rules:

  • Pick a password that consists of at least 8 characters
  • Use a capital letter and a number to complicate things a bit
  • Replace a password with a phrase

The last tip is perhaps the most helpful. While we tend to forget random jumbles of letters and numbers, it’s easier to remember phrases that are unique to your friends or family.

Additionally, SSO (single sign-on) can help you protect your computer or devices. It’s a service that allows you to log in once and then gain access to all systems and accounts without having to log in again to each.

However you decide to protect yourself, know that it can make all the difference in how safe your system is. Take some time to consider our tips and create a password that’s unique, memorable, and secure.

Is Your Lenovo Laptop A Ticking Time Bomb Waiting to Go Off?

Make Sure Your Lenovo Laptop Isn’t at Risk From a Newly Discovered Cybercrime Security Threat!

Lenovo Laptop Superfish

If you use a Lenovo laptop, you’re at great risk of being hacked right now. It was recently discovered that Lenovo had recently sold laptops packaged with Superfish adware automatically installed on them.

What does that mean? Not only is adware an annoying and completely unnecessary addition to a computer (embedding advertising into browsers like Internet Explorer and Google Chrome), but Superfish comes with a dangerous bit of code that leaves the door to your computer open wide to any hacker on your network!

If Superfish is active on your computer, it allows anyone sharing your WIFI network to easily and quietly hijack your web browser and poke through all your private files. Your usernames, passwords, bank credentials, and other personal information… all an open book to a cybercriminal drooling at the thought of stealing your identity or holding your data hostage.

If you’ve bought a Lenovo laptop, you need to ensure that you aren’t vulnerable to this terrible threat! Lenovo has released a set of instructions and a download for removing the Superfish threat, and you need to immediately follow these instructions and ensure your computer is safe.

If you do discover evidence of Superfish on your computer, take immediate action to start reinforcing your security. Change your passwords, contact your bank to check for unauthorized activity, and call MAXTech at (813) 333-2878 right away. We’ll help you remove all traces of Superfish from your laptop and install a clean version of Windows with no adware or other security threats built in. We’ll also ensure you’re using the right security products to stop unauthorized access and keep your vital data backed up in case of disaster.

Lenovo has lost a lot of consumer trust with this scandal, and it makes it difficult to know who you can turn to for safe and reliable information technology. Our Tampa, Brandon & Riverview managed services include vendor management and connections to help you procure the right equipment for your needs without worrying about preinstalled adware or potential security threats.

The Majority of Security Breaches Come From Malware Infections

Does Your IT Company Take the Required Security Precautions to Combat Malware?

Cyber Security

Do You Know What Your System Is Up Against?

Malicious Software is the given name to malware – it can refer to any computer program designed to harm your computer or carry out any actions without your knowledge. Unfortunately, it comes in a wide number of forms making malware typically hard to detect and stop from spreading. Computer viruses are the most familiar type; they’re referred to that way because of how they spread by making copies of themselves. You’ve probably also heard of Spyware which is used to steal and transmit personal information.

How Can You Stay Safe?

Criminals use malware for a number of reasons – none of which are good for you. That’s why your business needs to stay ahead of the game and be protected at all times, and the right IT company can do that for you. You shouldn’t be left to handle security protection on your own – you need a company you can trust to implement the proper tools to keep you safe.

Education is Key

You and your employees need to be properly informed about the dangers of malware and how to take the proper precautions, such as fishing out suspicious e-mails and avoiding dangerous or unknown links.

Microsoft’s New Outlook App Makes Email Easier on iOS and Android

Microsoft Releases Outlook App For iPhone, iPad and Android Devices.

Microsoft Outlook on iphone

After making Office available to iOS and Android users, Microsoft is now offering their Outlook email service as a mobile device app. Outlook is designed to bring email, calendars, contacts and documents together in one easy-to-navigate app.

Read some reviews.

This saves users time and hassle – to access Outlook accounts on devices before this, users had to rely on multiple other applications. Android users had Outlook.com or the OWA app – which required an Office 365 subscription. iOS users had the standard Mail app and also used OWA. Now, they can access their Outlook accounts in one easy place.

The new app has built in calendars, contact lists, a documents tab, and can be synced with other accounts like Dropbox, Yahoo and Gmail. Additionally, you can view your most important emails from any account in one place – or choose to keep them stored separately. Swipe gestures allow you to archive important emails or even schedule less crucial ones for later.

The outlook app provides several features built to streamline work and make business interactions easier.

  • Calendar can be used to determine available meeting times; you can then share them with co-workers or schedule a conference
  • Large files from your email, Dropbox, or OneDrive can be attached and sent with absolute ease
  • Receive notifications and reminders of important appointments or meetings
  • Outlook asses your inbox and can filter through the most important messages, while less crucial mail is sent into an “Other” inbox
  • Contacts are sorted based on who you communicate with most and you can easily access files, appointments, or emails that have been sent and received

Microsoft’s Outlook app is available now for Apple devices and will be rolled out soon for Androids, though a preview is currently available in the Google Play Store.
